Introduction

As we reflect on the past academic year and prepare for the upcoming one, it is imperative to communicate our strategic priorities to ensure the success and growth of our students across all levels. The Baker Springs School System, serving a diverse community in East Tennessee, encompasses 17 high schools, 16 middle schools, 45 elementary schools, and 30 preschools. Our mission is to provide a comprehensive and inclusive education that fosters academic excellence, social-emotional development, and lifelong learning.

This memo outlines our annual priorities, aligned with our commitment to continuous improvement and our vision of becoming a leading educational system in Tennessee and beyond.

1. Enhancing Academic Achievement

Objective: Improve academic performance across all grade levels to exceed state averages.

  • Curriculum Development: Revise and enhance the curriculum to ensure alignment with state standards and integration of critical thinking, problem-solving, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education.
  • Professional Development: Provide ongoing professional development opportunities for teachers to adopt best practices in instruction, assessment, and classroom management.
  • Data-Driven Instruction: Implement data-driven decision-making processes to identify student needs, tailor instruction, and monitor progress through formative and summative assessments.

2. Supporting Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)

Objective: Promote the social and emotional well-being of students to create a supportive and inclusive school environment.

  • SEL Programs: Expand SEL programs to teach students essential skills such as empathy, resilience, self-regulation, and conflict resolution.
  • Mental Health Services: Increase access to mental health services by hiring additional counselors, social workers, and psychologists to support students’ emotional and behavioral needs.
  • Anti-Bullying Initiatives: Strengthen anti-bullying policies and initiatives to ensure a safe and respectful learning environment for all students.

3. Closing the Achievement Gap

Objective: Reduce disparities in academic performance among different student groups, particularly for the highest-need students.

  • Targeted Interventions: Develop and implement targeted interventions and support programs for students who are at risk of falling behind, including tutoring, after-school programs, and summer learning opportunities.
  • Inclusive Practices: Promote inclusive teaching practices that recognize and value the diverse backgrounds and learning styles of all students.
  • Community Engagement: Partner with community organizations and families to provide additional resources and support for students facing socio-economic challenges.

4. College and Career Readiness

Objective: Prepare students for success in post-secondary education, the workforce, and civic life.

  • Career Pathways: Expand career and technical education (CTE) programs to provide students with hands-on learning experiences and pathways to various careers.
  • College Preparation: Enhance college preparatory programs, including Advanced Placement (AP) courses, dual enrollment opportunities, and college counseling services.
  • Partnerships: Establish partnerships with local businesses, higher education institutions, and community organizations to create internship and mentorship opportunities for students.

5. Technology Integration

Objective: Leverage technology to enhance teaching, learning, and administrative processes.

  • Digital Literacy: Incorporate digital literacy into the curriculum to ensure students are proficient in using technology responsibly and effectively.
  • Tech Infrastructure: Upgrade technology infrastructure in all schools to support the integration of digital tools and resources in the classroom.
  • Professional Training: Provide comprehensive training for teachers and staff on the use of educational technology to improve instructional practices and student engagement.

6. Strengthening School Infrastructure

Objective: Maintain and improve school facilities to provide safe, healthy, and conducive learning environments.

  • Facility Upgrades: Prioritize facility upgrades and renovations to address safety concerns, modernize classrooms, and create more collaborative and flexible learning spaces.
  • Sustainability Initiatives: Implement sustainability initiatives to reduce the environmental impact of our schools, such as energy-efficient lighting, waste reduction programs, and green building practices.
  • Accessibility: Ensure that all school facilities are accessible to students, staff, and visitors with disabilities.

7. Community and Family Engagement

Objective: Foster strong partnerships with families and the community to support student learning and development.

  • Communication Channels: Enhance communication channels between schools and families to ensure transparency, accessibility, and engagement in the educational process.
  • Parent Involvement: Encourage parent involvement through volunteer opportunities, parent-teacher organizations (PTOs), and family-oriented events and workshops.
  • Community Partnerships: Build and strengthen partnerships with local businesses, non-profits, and civic organizations to provide additional resources and support for our schools.
